Plecostomus (commonly shortened to "pleco") is the collective name for freshwater armored suckermouth catfish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Originally native to the rapid rivers and tropical streams of Central and South America, they are widely famous in the aquarium hobby for their unique prehistoric appearance and their ability to keep aquarium glass free of algae.
1. Key Physical Characteristics
The Sucker Mouth: Their name literally translates from Greek and Latin roots to mean "folded mouth". Positioned on the underside of their head, this specialized mouth acts like a vacuum, allowing them to firmly rasp algae off rocks, driftwood, and tank glass while resisting strong water currents in the wild.
Armored Exoskeleton: Instead of traditional fish scales, plecos are heavily protected by longitudinal rows of interlocking bony plates called scutes. They also sport sharp, rigid spine rays on their fins that they can lock into place to defend themselves against larger predators.
Intestinal Breathing: Many pleco species possess modified digestive tracts that allow them to gulps air from the water's surface and extract oxygen directly through their gut, enabling them to survive in oxygen-poor waters.
