Santa Claus Swordtail

The Santa Claus Swordtail (also commonly referred to as the Kohaku Swordtail or Koi Swordtail) is a highly striking, selectively bred freshwater fish variant of Xiphophorus helleri. It is named for its festive, high-contrast bright orange-red and shimmery translucent white coloration, which mirrors a traditional Santa Claus suit or Japanese Kohaku Koi.

Profile Overview

Care Level: Easy—ideal for beginners.
Temperament: Generally peaceful community fish, though males can sometimes be territorial toward other males.
Distinct Features: Males possess a distinctively long, pointed "sword" extension on the lower half of their tail fin. They are also livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming live fry rather than laying eggs.
Max Size: Typically grows up to 4 inches (around 10 cm).

Tank Requirements & Water Care

To keep these active swimmers thriving, aim for the following setup:

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons to provide plenty of open swimming room.
Water Temperature: 64°F to 82°F (18°C to 28°C).
Water Parameters: Prefers hard, alkaline water with a pH of 7.0 to 8.3.
Environment: Include dense live plants and decorations to simulate their natural habitat. This offers crucial hiding spots for newborn fry to protect them from larger tank mates.

Diet

They are active omnivores. They readily accept a well-balanced diet consisting of high-quality tropical flake food, pellets, and freeze-dried or live treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
